What He Didn't Do For You

J.R.Johnson

A decade barely started
way back in 82
A teenage boy
in Levi's jeans
and Colorado boots

Rock n roll and hormones
held adolescence up
Preppy girls in Nike shoes
and Jordache covered butts

His black book full of numbers
A buddy had to go
Three childhood friends
less evil sought
He traded Mike for Joe

They partied every weekend
Ignoring jealous scorn
They didnt care what people thought
So "F-em all" was born

Drinking was religion
Communion in a can
A cooler for an alter
Their God held in their hand

The brothers worshiped music
Almost as much as beer
Sweet Child of mine
was often played
while fighting back a tear

The hairband era started
Sweet justice to their ears
But Kiss was their commitment
Their favorite band to hear

Their stories never ending
However pages turn
This story has a meaning
and a lesson to be learned

They wished to be eternal
but nothing ever lasts
Though thick as thieves
two brothers part
To seek a wife to have

One was sent a lady
A virgins bed was made
but when he slept with lady luck
his luck went down the drain

A seed of life was started
and yet he never ran
He held her tight
stood by her side
The boy became a man

Another seed was planted,
again he showed no shame
but mothers mood
had changed to blue
His marriage colored gray

Jealous was the mothers soul
Depression turned to sin
She walked away with both his seeds
and laid the blame on him

The 80's turned to 90's
2 years the devil stole
Reunited friends again
Fate gained his brother Joe

In time the man recovered
He tried to start again
Another lady traps his soul
Another seed begins

A boy is born
his dream fulfilled
Repeats Dads younger days
He raised the boy all by himself
until he sailed away

Again his world turned hazy
The crazy train derailed
He tried to stay on track for them
Their Dad refused to fail

And now his kids are all grown up
His generations thru
It heals his heart to finally tell
The things he DIDN'T do

He could've been a soldier
Left you to win a fight
You could've lost your daddy to
a bullet or a knife

He could've been a Rockstar
Sex drugs and rock n roll
No time to play the game with you
instead he plays the road

He could've went to college
Spent half his life in school
A highly educated Dad
who should've learned from you

He could've been a doctor
Invented cancer cures
Examine patients problems
No time to look at yours

He could've been an astronaut
and journey to the stars
Leave you and earth to be the first
to live and die on mars

Not one of these are losses
or even barely missed
Where would he be
without these three
No life without his kids

So if you ever question
the things he tried to do
It's not about what he did in life,
It's "What He DIDN'T Do".                                                For You!

  • Comment from author about the poem: I worked hard my whole life to get my kids grown. I started out young and took the hits in life but my kids never realized what a Dad gives up. Parents now seem to try to give children too much.
