Teenager

yanbee

Head turned down to a glowing screen.
Reflected in my eyes I'm sure I seem
Out of it, like I'm not quite here-
I'm elsewhere.
Discovering the secrets behind history,
Hidden deep in this web of ones and zeros
That no-one really sees
Really untangles-
Or I'm reading, the inkless pageless
Of illegal pdfs is quite a luxury when
Real textbooks cost more than the
Forest that was chopped into
Salad to make them
But I must look unreal
Unbeeleevable (lol)
Mechanised
With metal in my ears
And metal in my hands
Basically a detachable limb
But somehow my most precious
My, I do suppose I really am just a teenager
We, the next generation, who grow branches of metal as we spread our wings and flee our nests, leave one country - explore another
World's your oyster if you're privileged
But here
On this little metal screen
We get a different glimpse into the world
Connect with others whom in another life
We may never have met
Or maybe we're changing the world with
These little metal screens
Like those kids in the Kolkata slum
Who literally put themselves on the map
Using those tiny metal screens
To register new borns, take photos
and registering their existence on Google Maps
Can you imagine? Changing the lives
Of your entire impoverished community
At 12
By tapping buttons on a metal screen
And setting off to map your existences
Profound no?

But no, I really am just a teenager.
Tapping away on a phone
Growing little metal antlers
I wonder what will be metal next
Super lenses made publicly accessible

  • Comment from author about the poem: Just an observation. (Also, to learn more about the "Daredevils" - a gang of 12 year olds in the Kolkata Slum - I highly recommend reading "Adventures in the Anthropocene" by Gaia Vince)
