There was a time I wanted to be
one of the guys instead of a girl.
I loathed the words, "Act like a lady”
and “ No playing in the dirt, you’ll
mess your clothes up”!
The agony of jumpers, skirts
and pantihose that required
my legs remain close together.
I detested my required participation
in clothes and shoe shopping.
If there was a hell I felt like
I was currently in it.
I believed wearing uncomfortable
curlers in overnight was a torturing
technique for little girls as
they tried to sleep.
My hair must have felt
resentment too because
a hour later the curls
fell right out.
As I got older I became
very rebellious.
My hair was always in a ponytail.
I held spitting contests
and played kickball
with the boys.
I wrestled despite the
bruises it would leave.
I refused dresses and
skirts only wearing pants.
Now that I am older
I have made peace
with womanhood
by making it my own.

- Comment from author about the poem: I appreciate my womanhood now but I still make it my own. I will always be a tomboy at the core of who I am. I still loath skirts, dresses and pantihose to this day lol! Actually I am positive that pantihose were invented as a torturing device for anyone who is forced to wear them. I hope you enjoy the poem and find yourself even chuckling a little. For my ladies out there that read this let me know in the comments if you too were a tomboy who can relate to this and if you are like me who never grew out of it. For my gentlemen out there who read this let me know in the comments if you had sisters or female friends who were just like this.

Oh yes! I remember those days. Hated wearing pantihose. But like you, I've learned to embrace womanhood. I love being a woman....although I've also made it my own! Thank you for sharing!
I love to see my fellow tomboys out there redefining womanhood in their own unique way! Thank you for sharing your perspective and for taking the time to read this really long poem lol! 😊
Read this a couple of times
Almost afraid to comment as I dread to think what the current climate would hold for you
Loved the write
Tomboys in my day seemed so happy
Great to see the struggles endured
Enjoyed very much
LOL I know! Being a female has never been easy but as you get older it has it's perks. You learn with age to not care about judgement and to just be yourself which is why tomboys are happier. As I got older everything slowly became more relaxed but I feel for the women before me who had it the hardest with stereotypes. Just know on my page you can say whatever you wish to without fear lol. Thank you for reading and sharing your perspective! I hope you come back! 😊
I think you’ve cracked it, so to speak. There is so much possibility today to avoid the societal gendered stereotypes imposed on any human being to be themselves in whatever form their genitalia and chromosomal make up may be, without resort to radical surgery and a lifetime of hormonal medication, that to undergo this, rather than just be oneself, is beyond my somewhat limited comprehension.
Please note that I am ancient and often venture into territory where ‘angels fear to tread’.
I feel the same way! I respect other's choices and just leave it at that. But from my own perspective I chose to be a woman who also loves things that men like, what was once known as simply being a tomboy. I miss the simpler times lol. I don't understand why like you said everyone is just themselves. Thank you for your bravery on sharing your perspective about this! I love to see it! Also thank you for reading! I hope you come back! 😊
Hi destiny .. good writing ) I think wear what we feel like .. women don’t have to wear skirts or dresses if they don’t want to .. everyone is different .))
Exactly everyone can wear whatever they wish to! I am glad today culture is a lot more relaxed in this way and the mindset has changed. I wrote this from the perspective of my younger self back in the 90's/ early 2000's when the perspective was just starting to shift in accepting tomboy's. Thank you for sharing your perspective and taking the time to read my poem! 😊
Good write DP.
Thank you!
Never be someone that you're not, I've told you this before and I'm going to again, you are exactly who you're meant to be, a strong and beautiful woman, that's smart and funny , you are who God has made you, NEVER CHANGE YOUR TRUE SELF!!
LOVE YA, Melissa
