WHERE THE EAGLE OBSERVES

nephilim56

The sign of the eagle
Bells tolled no pain
I wallowed in thoughts
Of much promised rain.

The funeral cars arrived
Gleaming black and neat
All in a line
In my daze and my grief.

The door opened for me
Solemnly to climb
To the smell of fresh leather
The engine to chime.

Eyes squinting to penetrate
Sunshine without warmth
Awesome smell of fresh leather
In that moment caught.

As if on a carpet
We moved smoothly in style
The face of a believer
Strong in my mind.

Grass beneath my feet now
Upon a pathway free of time
A trench so deep
I fought not to weep.

Something inside tethered
I looked to the sky
Unable to shake free
The awesome smell of fresh leather.
