“The Art of Alone”
(Tom Entrican 9/19/2023)
When you are in your mother’s womb
Or fall down into a forgotten old tomb
Drop the ball in the game of the week
No one will look for you in hide and seek
When girls only want to be your friend
Your dog runs away again and again
No grandchildren running around the home
You have mastered the art of alone
Were you to grumpy for too many years
And it clings to you like dried up old tears
Perhaps you did not dress very well or bathe
Maybe they do not like the shape of your face
Perhaps because my breath can strip paint
And everyone knows I sure ain’t no saint
When your heart shatters like a heated stone
Your payment for learning the art of alone
Oh sure there is no dirt or smells about
Certainly no one to bop you on the snout
And at least there is no one to make you cry
Or rip out your heart when they say goodbye
But for sure we have the Lord on our side
And a sense of peace and comfort inside
Till they all welcome me on my journey home
I’ll continue to perfect the art of alone
