Dimming Memories

FallingAwake2

Spent my birthday

swaying in the hammock,

thinking of you.

My memories were once

clear and bright,

like the unobstructed,

late- afternoon light.

But now, they dissipate

as the shadows deepen.

The layers of

canopy overhead

cast down shade

and, this light

– these memories–

inevitably slip away.

My cells grasp

at what remains,

absorbing the residue

 of radiance…

retaining what’s left

of my memories.

With the lapsing

of light, the sound

of your voice fades,

your laughter quiets,

You start to dim,

and I lose you

all over again.
