I Should Have Known

Anne Frances

I should have known
When you shut me out the first time
And said get out of my house, you're no longer mine.

When you left me and walked out
"I didn't, if you believe I didn't!", you said
And I kept the faith, without a doubt.

I should have known
When you highlighted my flaws quite often.
While holding me in your arms, you looked at another woman
Praising her in awe with eyes full of admiration

I know I wasn't perfect
And I didn't expect you to clap for my progress
I hoped you appreciated my efforts
Didn't coming out of my shell deserve a little validation?

I should have known
Because it was always you, people dear to you versus me
When it should've been just you and me

No, I didn't just keep taking
And you weren't the only giver
all through the years
I gave you my all
put you on a pedestal

You should have known!
How could you have not known?!
I stand facing such questions
Retrospecting all the times I let go, giving several reasons

After giving it my all
I'm left empty handed
Broken heart and soul
Now, I finally know.
