Rules (Triolet Poem)

janiselizabeth

These are the rules all men must follow,
remember you are not allowed to cry.
If you do, your pride you must swallow.
These are the rules all men must follow,
it's actually better if you just stay hollow.
We don't really care if you want to die.
These are the rules all men must follow,
remember, you are not allowed to cry.

Love the form to this write and can appreciate the underlying sentiment conveyed by the subject. This is what my father taught me, but I've taught my adult boys that it's okay to cry, without having to swallow their pride. They're more considerate of others as a result.

Thank you. I plan on teaching my boys the same thing. I think we would have far less of a mental health crisis including anger issues (that society simply stigmatizes as toxic masculinity) if men were allowed to have and be taught to cope with the emotions that women are allowed to. But you can’t learn coping skills if you aren’t even allowed to experience the emotions in the first place.

Great job. You are right on target. There is a double standard.
