Harvest Homily

Tune: Golden Sheaves

('To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise')

Deuteronomy 26 v.1-15

********

Golden sheaves, harvest offerings

Basket of first-fruits each brings

In celebration to the Lord

The land is blessed by His word

And they there His goodness rehearse

In their spoken and sung verse

Starting from Abraham's time when

He went into Egypt then

He was there with a few people

And became great nation all

The Egyptians them harsh treated

They there downcast, defeated

And when they did unto the Lord

Call, He heard our voice, He heard

Looked on our labour, affliction

Helped us in our oppression

And He bought us out with strong hand

As His mighty army, band

Did terrible and awesome deeds

That e'en our enemy heeds

Showed plagues and signs and wonders great

He came to our help not late

Has given us this land which flows

With milk and honey, each knows

And now, behold. I here have brought

First-fruits of the land as taught

In the law, for the festival

And recalling God's gifts all

Thus baskets before the Lord set

His doings they not forget

And worshipped the Lord their God there

And in rejoicings did share

Their tithes they made throughout the year

God's providings did appear

In humble thanks, not selfishly

But offerings generously

Their prayer, that the Lord look upon

Them, to prosper, bless each one

They dependent on Him, faithful

Grace to them favourable
