The Midnight Caper

Summersounds68

The midnight caper occurs every night,
that is when the topiaries come alive,
admired during the day for their artistic display,
in darkness fairies appear with their magical dust,
covering all and giving them freedom to move,
all part of the sculptured plants being in the groove.

Stationary and proud Rooster is the leader,
as he jumps over his frence and gathers the others,
all follow him along the city sidewalk to the park,
where birds watch the nightly routine from above,
walking plants of various shapes and design sway
to their favorite spot where all be dancing away.

Rooster the leader catches the eye of a pretty hen,
she is an exact replica of a Rhode Island Red,
he asks her to dance a slow motion waltz,
both fell in love instantly as they smooched along,
others twisted and turned dancing with glee
as the fairy band played while they were free.

The music stopped and all headed home,
following Rooster and then dispersed to their places,
by morning everything looked the same
except something was different at the Rooster site,
standing next to him was the Rhode Island Red Hen,
slightly brushing his feathers with hers again.
