Yellow and Indigo makes brown

Anonymous_Poet

The curtain’s horizontal slats file behind each other like soldiers,
Tasked in delaying the dawn, breaking up wisps of light crossing the threshold,
Hiding two lovers blanketed in last night,
Awake, yet silent,
Longing looks thrown like lifebuoys-
across the cold crevasse separating warm bodies,

Two girls cut from simple linen,
One dyed by morning rays,
Golden hair spilling over sun kissed skin,
Laughter freckling her cheeks,
The other bathed in midnight,
Indigo cloth draped over slender limbs,
Bottomless eyes framed in deep onyx,

Mutual lovers,
Bodies ghosting shared heat,
Intertwined by shared time,
They circled each other for years,
Locked in dizzying orbit,
Never daring to solar eclipse,
For indigo wings would burn in the touch of the sun,
And the yellow gravitational pull would wane-
Planets abandoning her, spinning away,

For when the lovers unexpectedly collide,
Souls swirling and mingling,
Their brightness dulls with intimacy,
Shifting into smells of coffee and spices,
Wrapped in love-worn fabrics,
Breathing dirty brown smudges onto the sidewalk,
A colour that causes pedestrians to prey and pray,
Scrutinizing and dissecting their canvas,
Disagreeing with their palette,
Until they scrapped and bleached it white,
Squeezing pure liquid from the tube,
‘Fixing’ a picture where the lines didn’t touch,

In the draining darkness surrounded by a paper-mâché room,
The girl’s fringes bled with melting chocolate strokes,
Whispering butterfly kisses against collarbones,
Promising they would leave this little solar system,
Where the crowd didn’t stare,
To live far away in a house on the corner,
Where the walls were painted warm brown,
