The Cost

B. Frost

The times have changed since back in the day
For the majority of aspects I think most would agree to say

In the years when a handshake was as good as your word
Somewhere that’s been lost and the fundamentals have since been blurred

A time when character was shaped in you from the first memories of being young
Now it seems that the initial step of the ladder is missing its rung

Humility and integrity were principles that helped you earn respect
Now with each new introduction you really don’t know what to expect

When the truth mattered and being honest sealed the deal
Each is by the wayside now and neither is part of what is real

Back when the basics were instilled in you with discipline as needed
Today our values have been compromised and in most have been deleted

It seems like the world has been set ablaze for all of it to melt
It never would have turned out this way if we didn’t stop using the belt

We took the guidance out of schools about sixty years ago
It didn’t take much effort for that yield to begin to show

As for the golden generations it seems all the effort is now for not
When they used to work their fingers to the bone for everything they got

I miss the times when you could see genuine in an individual smile
The definition of that one has been misplaced for quite a while

Never before would it be acceptable for dignity to be dismantled
It wouldn’t take much of a look to know what exactly needs to be canceled

It’s apparent today that in most the good has far been lost
Take a moment to look around no need for help in assessing the cost
