Wáng Zhāojūn And Anna Von Kleve

Kinsley Lee

Was painted ugly, Zhāojūn's sent
To barbarian king to marry,
And pretty depicted Anna, was sent
To Henry VIII to marry.
A woman's fate is determined by the artist's
Heart, putting them handle.
Like today at their will, the media distort
The picture and deceive the people.

  • Comment from author about the poem: The old days before, the lady's fate depended on the hands of the artist. In old China, Zhāojūn was sent to North for marrying King of the Huns. Anne Von Kleve married Henry the 8th, by the portrait.

That was a very common custom but the portraits were often very flattering for obvious reasons !
