One - A Poem about Acid Attacks

Samhita Venkat

One.

One time is all a woman has to say no.

One rejection should not equal a deadly kiss.

Our no should not equal a corrosive dance.

One vile of acid should not ruin a woman’s life.

Two.

Attackers will say that their actions are justified too,

Yet Aditya Raj was just two years old when he was attacked with acid and then dumped in a bin.

The man kidnapped and attacked the toddler after his mother rejected him,

And apparently that action makes his justified too.

Fifteen.

Laxmi Agrawal was attacked at fifteen years old after she repeatedly rejected a middle aged man’s marriage proposal.

Fifteen wasn’t too young to get married,

So using that logic, he took away her identity at just fifteen.

Fifteen hundred.

Globally, there are at least 1,500 acid attacks reported each year.

1,500 women and their families endure violence just because a women said no

One.

The first recorded acid attack happened in Ancient Greece around First Century AD.

On that day when Metrodora threw a corrosive substance on Erotion, the number of acid attacks became one too many.
