Modern Day Hero

Tom Dylan

When I was seven years old

I wanted to be the Batman

all caped and crusading around Gotham,

the mysterious hero in the Dark Knight.

When I was seventeen years old

I wanted to be John Lennon

round glasses and army-shirt cool

protest singing about peace and love.

These days I find it's a daily struggle,

when everyone wants you to be just like them,

to be and to remain, and to stay,

true to the person I am.

  • Comment from author about the poem: When I was younger I had heroes that I would look up to and aspire to be like. Now, I just want to be myself. I tried to get that idea down in a poem.

We all want to have heroes when we are young. Then we grow up and invest in ourselves. Why be a clone of someone else when we can be unique. Nicely crafted poem.

Thanks for your comments, Cassie. That's exactly my point. We have to stick to who we are. Cheers Tom

If there is darkness all around you, YOU might be the light! Didn't write that but it helps me. Love your writing! JR
