Peurile

Lauren Fitzgerald

If you happen to find her,

Could you please let her know?

That I’m incredibly sorry none of my words reached her on time?

That the elementary “it’s okay”

Seemed far too complex for my mouth to crochet

Could you tell her that she is going to make it?

With legs that kick stronger than her fear

And that I’m waiting right here

A few miles under this abysmal burrow

Just as high as my ego lets me go

That I’m right here with outstretched arms

Anxious for her majestic self to fall into

And nestle within my soul her face

In the warmest, most humble embrace

The kind that lingers even after you let go

The kind that makes up for a thousand words

In its silent eloquence

Could you tell her every sorry I’ve ever wanted to say?

That I’m sorry for all the scars I left behind

That I’m sorry for caring too much

And for caring too little

That I’m sorry for the power I’ve given my words

And for the power I’ve taken from hers

That I’m sorry I thought empty apologies would fix it all

I’m sorry.

If you happen to find her,

Could you please let her know?

That if there’s ever a chance

The thinnest sliver of hope

If she would come visit me

In these barren depths of my own fragility

For there is nothing more that I could possibly ask

Than to lose myself in her buoyant smile

One last time before I die.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem was really a lot of emotions to me. It reflected on how I’ve grown as a person and shaken off those qualities in me that I thought were unnecessary and childlike along the way. When I sit down now, alone, in a spiral of my own making, I realise how important and precious those parts of me where. Parts I left behind without saying a proper goodbye.
