They set up rules for a functional harmony
Love thy neighbor, they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough
An obvious reward in being that good kid
Believe in karma, they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough
Excellence has many dimensions when you strive
Try and try again, they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough
Navigating through emotions was underrated
Sacrifice is the high road to take, they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough
For all that you can buy, love isn't out of sale
You can't buy happiness with money, they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough
Trouble in paradise? Gratitude prevailed in school
Always bring a return gift, they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough
Reciprocity was kindness, care was love
Always respond with politeness, they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough
There's a questioning checkpoint on all fronts
Don't take candies from strangers they said
Guess I did, I still do, it has been rough,
sometimes

I liked this piece and its presentation. Liked the repetitive ending of each stanza and the message from each idiom. It's somewhat vague ending is great leaving it up to the reader to interpret.
Thanks for taking the time to read and for your kind words 😊
