A jealousy of birds.

Jess B

The fire was bright,
Like someone I once loved,
And danced
Under the stars
That smattered the sky
Like words in a book.

The water
Moved slowly,
Like a tired heart,
Coming
And then
Going.

Rocks laid
Like memories
In abundance.

My aloneness
Was so loud
It was quiet.

The water brushed my toes
A tiny taste
Of humanity.

A jealousy of birds
Filled me up
Like truth
You don’t
Want to know.

I watched them
Across the sky
Together,
Like a parting glance,
Just before you go,
A breath you can’t see,
A thought you can’t hear;
But that feeling
You know
Like the very
Fabric of your soul.
