The Past Lair

Valerie Méndez

In each whispered verse, he persists.

His words of love, a persistent twist

But deep within her being, she feels.

His attachment to another, the truth reveals.

Does your heart belong to another's claim?

You vehemently deny, but it's not the same.

And does your spirit, essence remain tied?

Again, you deny, truth pushed aside.

In the depth of your being, you're aware,

That your happiness lies in the past's lair.

Yet, you resist admitting this truth,

Rejecting the love that stills hold its youth.

But she, a warrior, ready to face.

The battles that come, with love's embrace

Though she loves you, she understands,

that your heart, soul, and spirit are in different hands.

She waits for a carnal betrayal, it's true,

While emotional betrayal consumes her through.

In her sorrow, she decides to release.

You from her grasp, seeking a love that brings peace.

She recognizes her worth, deserving more,

Then an empty promise, a love to adore.

So, she lets you go, setting herself free,

knowing that her heart deserves to be happy.

  • Comment from author about the poem: sometimes we feel that our special person\\\'s heart and soul belongs to someone else, someone from their past and we overthink, we wait for the worst to happen, and sometimes does feelings and thoughts make us want to give up in the romance we have with our lovers, but at the end of the day all you want to be is happy, with or without them. Overthinking can be a curse and can damage relationships. The important thing is to be happy and if someone isn’t making you feel happy, then it!s time to move on. This poem tells me that you aren’t feeling loved. You have penned the lines well Valerie.
