I never went to university
I do not have a degree,
I would have loved to study
literature, history and art.
Without a clear idea
of direction or occupation
I drifted into the shackles
of the office nine-to-five.
When I hear people talk of campus,
degrees and graduations,
I feel a deep yearning
for the student years I missed.
I never attended freshers' week
never stayed in student halls,
never wore the cap and gown,
in a graduation family photo.
Had I gone away to university
I would have got it out of my system,
scratching that academic itch
and obtaining my degree.
But the fascination lingers still,
for learning, literature and poetry
for history, for language,
and lectures I never attended.
These days I can't help thinking,
had I gone to university
I would have spent three years in study
instead of a life-time.

Your reply made me lol.. My sister in law once put someone down who asked, who learned you maths? She replied, the same person who learned you English. π Thanks, Neville.
No need to berate yourself, as we can learn at any age. There's adult learning courses, classes, self-studying, etc. π
Thanks a lot for your comments. I do think that maybe my interest in the more academic side of things may stem from the fact I didn't go on to higher education. Cheers, Tom. π
Yes, we can be interested in academic things, even if not going to Higher Education. Some writings, books, etc by academic people may go over our head a bit sometimes though. But nor did I go on to H.E.!
Yes, that's exactly it! Glad we're on the same wavelength. π
I think your doin alright, regardless.
Thanks for your comments, appreciated.
We all have regrets Tom. I didn't got to college either, at the time I felt that I'd had enough of school. I just wanted to work. π
Thanks a lot for your comments, AP. I was the same, and didn't know what I wanted to do. Cheers, Tom.
We're two brothers from another mother Tom. ππ
Haha fact! Nice one, AP. π
I do not have a university degree either, though I have attended many short courses on campus. I also worked for a university for 16 years. Loved the students, didnβt particularly want to be one though. Nothing wrong with life long learning Tom. Iβve joined that club too. Never too late to go to uni. Enjoyed your poem. You donβt need a degree to write poetry:) Have a great day.
Thanks so much for your comments, Cassie. Really appreciated. Yes, life-long learning, that's exactly it. Here's to it! π Have a good weekend.
Stop moaning.π Went to Uni age 36 and 46. A struggle - I'm sure it is possibly even more of a struggle today. However to quote an ancient adage: " Where there a will there's......
BUT (as per correspondence from several sources above) unless that piece of paper is necessary for an occupation, there are many other sources. Once upon a time "autodidact" was a badge of honour.
Going for a third degree - awarded from the university of life. Won't graduate until......
Life is your best education. Great work.
Thanks a lot, Thomas. Really appreciated.
