A Dogs Loyalty

Mutt

They taught me not to bite

So I did not fight back.

They bit. They hurt. They hit.

But I did not fight back.

Good dogs do not fight back.

They taught me to respect them.

So I kept to myself.

They did not respect. They did not care.

But I continued to respect.

Good dogs always give respect.

They taught me to love.

So I let them match me to other dogs.

hey loved. But did not love me. Only my body.

But I continued to love.

Good dogs give their love.

They taught me to come back.

So I always returned.

They did not come back. They did not stay.

But I continued to return.

Good dogs are always loyal.

They taught me to listen.

So I followed their commands.

They listened. They listened to the cries of the dogs.

But I kept listening.

Good dogs follow their commands.

They told me to leave.

So I left.

They said they did not want me.

But I am supposed to be a good dog?

Only bad dogs are thrown away.

I am constantly amazed at the cruelty metered out to dogs by their owners. How on earth can you dump a loyal pet. Happens all too often. Just goes to show how awful our species can be. A moving poem.
