Lament for Babylon

Joakim Bergen

In my mind I see

The clad-bronze walls of Babylon

Which once beheld the Great Tower;

Where are they now?

Rivers of silver sand shift towards the setting Sun.

Ur-Babylon, light-city, desert's ruby-torch;

You lay silent, dormant, dead.

Not even the skeletal husks of your temples

Remain.

Time is hard at work.

It gnaws at the triumph of Man, renders it a mere mirage.

Vestiges of shadows woven by history linger where you once stood.

Jest becomes sadness becomes pain becomes anger becomes death.

I sit among you, fallen heroes, forgotten faces of Babylon;

I drink the waters you drank, I sit under the self-same Sun you beheld

As god.

I hear the echo, your voices sound in my heart; they sing hauntingly,

Through ages, through days.

They lament for Babylon.
