Shooting Stars

Garth Rakumakoe

You may not believe it now

as you hear it, but believe me

shooting stars live a hundred years

beyond their moments of brilliance

and that's why the good suffer

and die young - some from poison

and some from confidence

Shooting stars are larger than life

and will never be understood

for lucifer knows God's garden

and the lay of the land

Still we yearn, for constant stars

and not shooting ones

that take us with them

The many who suffer, die young

and die promising

We must pray for our children

My comments on the poem "Shooting stars” by Garth Rakumakoe
We are fascinated both by twinkling and shooting stars. Shooting stars last only moments within our sight (though they may last for a longer time) and then disappear. Twinkling stars remain visible for longer. “We yearn for constant stars” : naturally we yearn for stars that remain visible for a long time. “shooting ones
that take us with them” : we fear that shooting stars will take us with them when they disappear from sight. From humans’ natural wish to live for as long as possible, we wish to live long and we associate ourselves with twinkling stars that remain visible for long. Soman Ragavan. 5 February, 2024.
