Photo Album

Garth Rakumakoe

I figure, we're all but pictures

in a photo album

Life's own memorabilia

Still frames, of active times gone by

We are the roses adorning Popps

next to his '86 Corolla

We are that afro'd Dobie Gray portrait

gracing Uncle's living room

magnified by the warmth of his vocals

We are ever so, the chocolate smudged

grinning rascals, on yellow swings

Our laughters, still echo the vinyl static

of those days

We shed the same tears Auntie shed

when her newborn arrived

We are the sunshine of blessings

jubilation, happy times, tricycles

and the broken glass

in Joe Cocker's voice

We are the memoirs of strife

tape decks, combs in the hair, hopscotch

and songs our mothers used to love

-

We'd like to think we are black and white

truth is, we are much more colorful

and connected, as photos in an album

Like a bag of spilled beans

we are the collective remembrance

of all these people - and more

We are the symphony of it all!

Absolutely love this. You perfectly capture something. All those images coming together. And love the sentiment. Just brilliant.

Your words are elevated and supreme in this poem. I am moved by the poem’s all important message and am moving to every note of this beautiful and intimate family photo album. I even feel joy as if I am a part of it. It is an incredibly delicate task to witness and be a part of your story. Well done!

Aah nostalgia in poetic form! Beautifully written and so descriptive, i can almost see myself in that photo album. Thank you for taking us back to the care-free times. Great work G, as always.

Pardon me, I see I never came back to thank you. These are very kind words, fellow writer. Accept my deeply felt gratitude. Many many thanks.
