To Die In Your Dream

HenearO

How sad it is to be a marine biologist
because over time, you'll realize
how hopeless your dreams are.

But I still want to live that dream,
Sunbathing alongside the beached whales,
diving above the bleached coral reefs,
swimming along the finless sharks.

Enjoying the sunset with a half-eaten sunfish,
Kissing the battle scar of a grey whale,
like welcoming home my lover from a great war.

I'll dance with a school of flying fish
that no longer fly.
'Aren't you scared of the sharks?' I asked.
'Maybe getting eaten by our predator is more meaningful than surviving this life.'
'At least we could be useful for this hopeless world.' One of them answered.
'Well, what a gentleman you are.' I respond.
The fish doesn't seem flustered with my compliment.
On the contrary, it stayed calm and quiet.
As if the dance choreography was a part of a death ritual.

I take a glance around,
a calm. Quiet. Peaceful dream.
I closed my eyes and clasped my hands together
Please, let me die in my dream,
my place to go back to

Let me stay here
until death herself comes
Until my head bursts into pieces from the fish bombs
and my flesh gets caught by big nets
Let my bones rest on the sea floor
My blood, the salty water, and the whale songs
become one symphony.

I still want to die in my dream,
just like everyone else does.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I've always wished to be a conservationist, especially in the maritime sector. I love sea creatures, my favorite animals are whales. And I just can't bear the thought of them vanishing from the ocean. But I think not many people care about sea life, and it kinda makes me feel sad and hopeless.
