Empty Glass

Hugh

Alone they are
Separate tables
Side by side
Alone

No comfort in conversation
No reason
But reason
What can she say

She taps her feet
Signals
From a code book
Only she knows

She drinks her wine
He drinks his beer
A warm breeze is ignored
For cold facts

She wonders, not for the first time
Why here, why now
Not for him
But for how life has come to this

He looks at his beer
And thinks
Time for another
And another beer

As he returns
He sees clouds on the horizon
But far away and high
People walk past

She has gone
All that's left is an empty glass
What was expected?
Really, what did you expect?
