A Black Cat

Hugh

The black cat
Danced on the architecture
The black cat
Danced to the moon
Before the rain came

On a wet and slippery floor
I watch my step to stop a fall
Between clouds the moonlight shines on the water
The rooms echo to the sound of drips
The paper peels from the walls

Slates from the roof lay at my feet
The crack and slip as I walk
Outside the rain beats on the crumbling walls
Why did I come in here?
To hear the sounds of the bricks?

The black cat
Lies in the architecture
The black cat
Walks from the moon
As the clouds part

Further and further up the rotting stairs
Looking out from broken windows
At the top, nothing
But the rotten supporting beams
Where only the wind swept weeds grow

A black cat
Lays dead in the architecture
A black cat
That shines in the moon
A black cat
