My April Fool
My boyfriend Davy was at the door
with flowers, chocolates and lots more.
‘Happy April Fool’s Day’ he said with glee
“I’ve put a twist on it, don’t you see?”
Oh how I loved this youthful beau
It brings back memories of long ago
He had blue hair and mine was red
It was the sixties, so no one cared.
Those days were different from years before
Folk then stayed together for evermore.
We loved freely then, and had lots of fun
My friend Davy was not the only one.
As I grew from teens to womanhood,
I progressed through life as one should.
And Davy slipped away, into the past.
I sometimes wished it would have last.
I married a man, quiet, serious and sober
Of Years of tedium, we divorced one October
A childless union left me sad and alone,
for the rest of my life just to sit and moan
The grapevine works most of the time
But then their telegraph is more sublime.
Then came a moment to rejoice
Through the letterbox I heard a voice
It was Davy, not seen for such a while
I recognised him only by that old smile
Now an old man with chocolates and flowers
‘'twas truly April Fool, and the day was ours
