The Kindness of Strangers

Hugh

Doors
On automatic closers
Slide in smooth grace
Distracted
People raise their heads
Then look down again
Attentive
To their own thoughts
Among each other
Waiting
For the kindness of strangers
Within each of us
Prayers
Said for the departed
And the remaining
Echo
Across the years
And through the clouds
Returning
To earth as a place
To heart as a home
Doors
On automatic closers
