Avian

K. Blair

Does the sparrow atop the fence envy
The cardinal in the tree?

As people stop to look, does he think:
“They always admire him but never me.”

But unlike you and I, it seems birds are unconcerned with comparisons and beauty

Suddenly, the sparrow takes to the sky.
I watch from the ground, green-eyed monster personified.

I’m jealous of how he becomes one with the breeze
I’ll never know the freedom of being born with wings.

Is there anything for a bird to envy?
