Vera and Harold.

David Wakeling

Vera came from a large family in the South Coast,
They were called the Hill People because they were
self sufficient and lived on what God and the Angels provided.
Harold was a bullock driver.
He dragged giant cedar trees from deep in the woods out to the saw mill.
They didn’t have children and had been together for 30 years.

Vera liked crocheting and would sit up working for hours.
She waited for Harold to come to her in bed.
Mostly she would say a gentle prayer that no one ever heard.

“Oh God let me rest by the gentle flowing waters,
Where the hollyhocks are blooming,
I want to lay down on soft grass in the noon day sun,
Let me see my hearts rainbow one more time before I go.”

By the time she finished her crocheting and praying ,
She would be asleep.
Harold would arrive knowing she wouldn’t notice him.
He could slip into bed and not disturbed her.

Many people wondered why they stayed with each other,
they hardly spoke much anymore.
But that’s what Love is,
It is when people have endured all together, and transcended.

    Good write D.
Similar to me - by the time I'd finished finding out what 'Carpe Diem' meant, there was no day left to seize - it was midnight! lol.
