I remembered the day
They took my mother away
Disrupting my relaxation
I heard and felt vibrations
The echoes from the pounding of the door
“OPEN THE DOOR !” shouts once more
Door tears open forcefully
I awaken and I see the man in uniform
Brutally strikes my mother to the ground
I look around, and tears fall from my eyes
Bursting through my ears
My mother cries, I soon realise
I hear words scream “ JUST WAIT !”
My grip in my mothers arms start to weaken
As they strip my mother away from me
I soon remember what my mother said
Use your voice in times in need
In times of discouragement and struggle indeed
So when someone questions the color of your skin
Use your voice, the power within

- Comment from author about the poem: This poem shows what happened during the dawn raids. Being a Samoan Pacific Islander, it means so much to me to learn more about my culture and it's history. This passage was really emotional as I have family who've experienced the dawn raids, and I'm proud to be a living legacy to those who were impacted by the raids. So my grandparents, my reminder that I have a voice, a say, an opinion, a purpose - though I maybe powerless through my actions but not through my mouth ! So I wrote this poem as my entry for Pasifika Fusion representing my school - I hope that I do get placed. If anyone has any advice so that I can edit and adjust my poem, all are welcome to comment some suggestions.
