Sorry if there is a delay in replying or if I'm away for short periods. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon says, life is what happens while you're busy making other plans.

I’m working on this story

and this poem

and this painting…

but I have

a quandary

a dilemma.

How will I know

when its finished?

I dab a bit more paint

on the canvas,

hoping I haven’t ruined it.

I add a twist to my story,

that the killer is actually

the driver, not the hitcher,

if that makes sense?

Does the story end there?

Maybe I should add a police chase

and a shoot-out.

I write another line

of the poem

adding astounding alliteration

but does it work?

Is it finished?

I’m working on this story

and this poem

and this painting…

  • Comment from author about the poem: I just wondered that how we know when things are finished, when a story etc is finished and we\\\'re done. How do we know to stop and go on to the next project?

I donโ€™t think our art is ever finished. We continually look for ways to improve it. . A dab of paint here, a brush stroke there. I have poems, I still revise after 20 years. Have a happy Tuesday Tom.

Yes, that's exactly it. I was watching something on TV the other night, and this artist was painting away, dabbing here and there. I thought, how do they know when they're finished? How do any of us know? Maybe I'll come back to this poem and change it. ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Tuesday to you too, Cassie. Cheers, Tom.

โ€œHow will I know when its finished?โ€ --- Grammar, Sir, Grammar! Stap me vitals Sir - Thems three Items ,Thus plural. Language is all wot we got ; gotter git it right , otherwise how do we know Itโ€™s rightโ€ฆ.?
Great stuff Tom โ€“ Carry on with your ambidextrous antics. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Ah right, I do take your point, sir, but I was thinking of each thing individually.. I'm writing this story, I'm working on this poem,,, when will it be finished? Meaning each thing.. ๐Ÿ™‚ Technically I agree but in my head I was thinking of each thing separately... my dad and I have a similar discussion over whether words are one word, two words or hyphenated. I always chuck it down as one word and my dad is a stickler for a hyphen! ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, I dunno. Some wag said 'A letter (or book, story, etc) should be long enough as to be able to reach the end of it'.
In a way that's a complete useless bit of information, as we may read a book to the end, whether it's 10 pages or 500+ pages!

        • Tom Dylan

I like that, Orchi, very good! Long enough to reach the end! ๐Ÿ™‚

But what does it mean exactly?! lol. We might prefer to read a long book. heehee.
I heard of a writer sending a letter, just saying '?'
The reply letter he got was '!' Or maybe it was vice versa.
