The Smell of a Hard-Working Man

By Andrea Lam

3 a.m. my hard-working man comes home

To the one he's thinking of, the girl who seems to live alone

He only visits her once a month with hope she still hasn't found love

He greets me with a hug and a kiss on the cheek

Then pulls out a cigarette with his bundle of weed

I stood by him as he reeks of blood, sweat, and tears

He then yeets himself onto a couch and pops open a beer

La la la as my drunkard yaps away

He gets up, gently grabs my waist, and begins to sway

Our hands pressed together, we're dancing in the middle of the night

He then pulls the curtains closed and turns off the light

Hold me tight he said in a deep soft voice

For soon I have to leave I have no choice

We sleep peacefully on the ground his arms over mine

Tomorrow morning is when I send him my final goodbye

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem represents loyalty in a relationship. Even though distance exists between the two people, it does not pull them apart but rather at the end of the day love is what brings them back together.
