She's Already Here

J.Edse

Eggs churning

legs burning

a non stop race to futility

and constant pressure

I'm being watched

from behind

as I whisk

she wants to know everything

about me

now

how can I possibly relate to this person

sitting here in my room?

this woman

I just met yesterday

and now she's having breakfast with me

is something supposed to come of this?

when do I call her again?

we did have sex

I know the design of her pubic hair

and which way the strands fold

but how fast

should we start sharing secrets

with each other?

when should I smile comfortably?

I burn myself on the stove

and scream silently for help

hiding the welt from her

to pretend I'm tough enough

and delivering the coffee and food

feels like some sort of

half assed performance art

she laughs

a smile parts her lips

and we gaze at each other

across the table

letting things be

a breeze blows in

from the kitchen window

but there is no sound.
