Heavy Steps

Maplespal

The church grounds were somber at best.

A place where you would eventually rest.

I walked those heavy steps leading me to you,

to that location in the front of the pews.

Each step brought loving, and caring tears,

living through the one thing every lover fears.

All eyes from family and friends looked ahead,

after taking their turns to confirm your dead.

Your sister walked with me to my seat,

closer to your silenced heartbeat.

I convinced myself that day it was true,

before I turned and sat to your view.

Childhood, your family reviewed those days.

Friends had funny and amazing things to say.

The priest with his words, an assigned part.

I patiently listened caring for my heart.

When it was my turn to eulogize,

my thoughts were on your blue eyes.

My words reviewed our life together,

and how I will love you forever.
