Conning the Bafflements: a Triple Triolet

Paul W Conway

Things are not what they seem—
Oh, the shame of it all!
Though they shimmer and gleam
Things are not what they seem;
When we drift out of dream
We but dimly recall,
Things are not what they seem—
Oh, the shame of it all!

Things are not what they seem,
Nor does anyone care.
Shall we shout and blaspheme,
"Things are not what they seem!"?
No primordial scream,
Just pervasive despair :
Things are not what they seem
Nor does anyone care.

Things are not what they seem;
I am going back to bed
Into dreaming regime;
Things are not what they seem.
Hush, poetic phoneme,
There's no more to be said:
Things are not what they seem;
I am going back to bed.

Codicil:

Damn!
Things are what they seem,
And that's even worse;
Doesn’t that take the cream
That they are what they seem!
What dreams can I dream
To get rid of this curse,
Since things are what they seem,
And that's even worse?

    Disorientation and confusion upon awakening. Expressed over and over a repetitive thought. All nicely stated

    Not an easy form to stick strictly to and remain coherent - you've cracked it.
