Pebbles

jeffburton1

we are pebbles
thrown into the still water of a pond,

the ripples spread out
from the point of impact

transforming, by our passing,
the surface of the water,

creating a rhythm, a movement,
a dancing, a parade of effect,

that reaches far beyond us,
beyond our good intentions,

out beyond the laws
of simple consequence,

and though the stone is gone
the ripples sing of it still
