Deep in my heart, there's an empty space,
Where grief holds tight.
My brother's laughter, now just a trace,
A pain that stays, no matter the flight.
Seventeen years, a life so bright,
Taken away by the dark of night.
Now I walk alone, with sorrow's weight,
Haunted by memories I can't escape.
We were close, though miles kept us apart,
A longing for more, a heavy heart.
Visits were rare, a mix of joy and pain,
Now dreams are broken, leaving only the stain.
One fateful night, a choice too quick,
A stolen chance, a tragic flick.
He slipped away into the cold and dark,
His laughter gone, his life a mark.
The news hit hard, a shock too great,
A sibling lost, a void I can't shake.
I wished to see him, to hold him tight,
But fate was cruel, taking him from the night.
Through tears and whispers, I try to find peace,
In memories of him, in moments that cease.
His smile, his laughter, stays in my mind,
A bittersweet song, forever intertwined.
I'll hold his memory with love and pride,
In every step I take, he'll be by my side.
Though silent echoes, he follows my mind,
His spirit lives on, a calming ride, life's journey, one to stride.

- Comment from author about the poem: My half-brother passed away on November 14th, 2023. He snuck out, and while he was on his bike or something, he got hit by a drunk driver. It was her second time driving drunk, and she had her 11-year-old kid in the front seat. Can you believe that? She's not even being charged for killing my brother because they're saying it might not have been her fault. But she is being charged for her second DUI and for having her kid in the front seat. And get this, the plea deal is only 2 years of probation! This is all happening in Indiana, and I'm stuck here in Wisconsin, feeling helpless. So I wrote this poem to express my grief.

It's not just you. Now the power to give justice and condemn the troublemakers, are in the hands of humans. And we've failed to do the job correctly, mostly. But I definitely believe we'll get our piece of justice, in this life or after. I am so sorry.
Sending you good wishes and prayers!
Thank you
