You and Me

DesertWords

I thought I could conquer the stress and the strain,
but I only fool myself.
I thought I could walk alone on the way,
but I don't know which way to go.
The earth was once a friendly place,
but sometimes it's hostile and cold.
Once I admired the wisdom of age,
but now that just means "old."

Snap your fingers and the time is gone.
Not many verses left in the song.
My hope is that the right and the wrong
will balance each other out.

My mind says "Yes", my body "No"
I know what it means to go slow.
Has this hill always been so very steep?
This way?  Or, that?  I forgot.
Pain comes to visit more often these days.
The pharmacist knows my name.
I remember the days of hard work and sweat.
Now the days are about the same.

Snap your fingers and the time is gone.
Not many verses left in the song.
My hope is that the right and the wrong
will balance each other out.

But I know today the sun will rise.
Nothing can hold it back.
Today I'll see an old friend or two;
few things better than that.
I'll laugh at a joke, hear a bird sing,
talk on the phone to my child,
Regret the choice of hot sauce at lunch.
I should have taken mild.

I don't regret the passage of time.
That's the way it's supposed to be.
And no matter the season or hands on the clock,
it will always be you and me.
