TRENDS TWIST DESTINIES

Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke

Notice of absence from Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke
I will surely get back to you when I come online.

"Nwam, hold this,
In it contains
The precepts of life,
Morality pays.

University,
The gatherings
of foolish wise people,
Don't forget your root"
Nne, cautioned.

First year,
Her steps well guided
By echoing voices,
Of her parents.

Second year,
Worldly voices
Filter from mouths to ears
Dress code changes,
With reckless abandon.

Phyno and Davido
Her ringing tunes,
Hanging out
Becomes a habit.

Third year
Party halls,
Become lecture halls
Hostel becomes boring.

Boyfriend's room,
Her comfort zone
Skippy dresses,
Her public wears.

CGPA groans mournfully
'lecturers are wicked'
Becomes her slogan
Green Canopy,
Her GST class.

Fourth year,
Remorsefulness
and regrets her garments
Abortions her rewards.

Fifth year,
'Oh If I had known!'
Her sorrowful song,
Heartbreaks
Her project topics.

'University na scam'
Her new slogan,
Marriage her only option
Ministries, her second home.

Choir, the perfect unit
Long gowns, tightening hips
Suitors' attraction,
Brother Joseph, her target.

  • Comment from author about the poem: The poem reflects on trends in the university that students follow without recourse to the repercussions. Holding onto morality pays. Students, especially ladies who go to university easily forget the advice of their parents. They are easily carried away by peer group influence in the university.
