99 Red balloons

Maplespal

99 Red balloons

99 red balloons they bought with their dimes,

released them at dawn for each soldier that died.

Trying to hide the governments sins, their crimes,

to the world they spread their fables they all lied.

99 red balloons went floating by,

many more soldiers sent to die.

Secrets hidden from the masses,

interest fades as time passes.

99 red balloons more stories to be told,

released to the world as a reminder,

of the lives lost, of the soldiers controlled,

wave after wave into the meat grinder.

99 red balloons went floating past,

unfortunately, they won’t be the last.

99 red balloons come floating by,

the innocent watching, asking why.

99 red balloons for the rest of time.

  • Comment from author about the poem: In remembrance of all the soldiers lost and still to be lost to the lies and desires of the governments of the world. Yes, I still listen to NENA every now and then. They still inspire and make me think. I was 9-years old when the song came out.

A wonderful commemoration of the madness of war. Wars fought for misplaced religious beliefs, greed, and power. All illusions and lies. Very nicely written.

I heard that in Ukraine the fighters are now in their 50's.
    They've lost their youth.
