If I Could Buy My Freedom

rebellion_in_sanity

If I could buy my freedom
Would it lend me wings?
Wings to fly like the birds
Roam the blue sky
And, plant a kiss on her cheeks

Would it let me
Do a tango with the sky in my arms
Dance through the moon and stars
All night long

Would it let me
Live in the castles the clouds build in the sky
Sail with them all day long
And, fly to the moon when night arrives

Would it let me
Raise my voice, fearless and carefree
Like lightning cracking the sky open
Against injustice and tyranny

Would it let me
Fight the battle of freedom
The oppressed leading me
Would it give me courage
To paint pictures of their silent agony

Would it let me
Look in the mirror where I could see ME
And not the ugly distorted caricature
You painted of me

Would, would and would
I feel like drowning in a sea of 'woulds' around me
The only would I choose to follow
Would I be a better man, if I were to be free?

  • Comment from author about the poem: If I could break free of the limitations imposed by our financial systems and societal norms, then would I be a better version of myself? I really don't know. I hope I would be better but I am afraid that in many cases we find the opposite. That's the dilemma which nudged me to write this poem.
