DEMOCRAZY

Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke

Notice of absence from Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke
I will surely get back to you when I come online.

Madness of many,
Benefit of few,
Game of numbers,
The corridors of power
with politicking interest.

Freedom but in chains,
Ages of political freedom,
But the cacophony of corruption
holds us captive,
Progression in retrogression.

Back to the state of nature,
Where anarchy rules supreme,
Brutality smiles at the led,
Hearts in uniform are toys
in the hands of the leaders.

Education groan mournfully,
Agriculture at the mercy
of peasant farmers,
Refinery a dead mission,
Technology a borrowed culture.

Neocolonialism
on the seat of power,
An off-shoot of imperialism,
Exploitation of the downtrodden,
What a democracy!

Nepotism, tribalism and ethnicity
hijack the states,
Patriotism a folktale,
Who is behind the mask?
Everyone to their tents.

  • Comment from author about the poem: The poem reflects on Nigeria's Democracy and her crawling stage. It exposes the backwardness of Nigeria systems, and how the system has crippled every progressive development in the country. The masses are suffering without hope in sight. Nigerians are looking up to heaven in prayers wishing that God will come and fix the messed country's for them. But it's a pity that God cannot do for us what we can do for ourselves.
