GOOD NIGHT

Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke

Notice of absence from Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke
I will surely get back to you when I come online.

The world is pained,
FUWukari is clothed in ashes,
FST department is in coma,
The faculty is emotionally mad.

I don't know you from adam,
But the news of your deep sleep
broke many hearts,
Their tears mused my pen.

Your apparition visited my pen,
Tears couldn't let the pen bleed,
Many sobs in solitude,
You are too young
to journey this road.

Parental mistake signed this,
They ignored the warning of science,
Mismatch of genotype,
Now you paid the price.

Though fate was faithful,
To keep you this long,
But Ekwensu rages
at your future.

You survived the five years
TDB, in the dens of mosquitoes,
Hunger mocked at you,
Garri your only panadol.

Who will believe these tales?
Indeed fate isn't fair,
You fought all these fears,
Chukwu okike shielded you.

You jubilated at the pinnacle
of your success at FUWukari,
Many hands signed you out.

There was a feast in the village,
Everybody shared
in your painful laughter,
Enemies peeped through the windows.

Just last week,
NYSC called your name,
With smile you responded,
Now here we are, telling your tales.

Should we question Olisa?
FUWukari is bereaved,
Oh! what a world!
FST will pay you your dues.

Candles will weep,
In the gatherings of many,
Your soul will find peace,
If your deeds are at peace
with your Maker

  • Comment from author about the poem: The poem reflects on parental mistake of marrying mismatched genotype, and as a result of that it cause the death of their son whose genotype was SS. Though the guy survived it with many crisis from childhood to adulthood, but unfortunately he died after graduating from the university. The family and the society is deeply pained over his demise. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.
