LOVE IN THE JUNGLE

Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke

Notice of absence from Jude Chukwuemeka Muoneke
I will surely get back to you when I come online.

Love is a mysterious thing,
Circumstances determine who you love,
Many a man has fallen victim of its sting,
It slaps and makes a man rove.

Love is pain and gain,
My heart deeply clings to her,
Worried my heart is, but she worth the pain,
I hear jungle drums telegraphing afar.

Then I hear a wailing piano calling,
Her voice rises and falls in melody,
My heart whispers to my toes to keep walking,
Then the piano became rowdy.

Her melodious voice arrest my soul,
The mystic rhythm of her voice heals my soul.

  • Comment from author about the poem: The poem reflects on love and the beauty of African culture and tradition. In the poem lies clash of culture between African culture and Western culture. The piano represents Western culture, while the drum represents African culture. The two cultures clash in their sounds as the poet persona finds it difficult to dance the rhythm of the music that echoes from the two cultures. Towards the end, the poet persona decides to listen and appreciate the music echoing from the drum, and also dances the the rhythm of its sound. The persona chooses to appreciate his African culture and heritage, rather than to dance to the rhythm of the Western culture.
