Dance Our Dance

Human

Happy in meeting,

Polite in passing.

We dance our dance

And find ourselves lacking.

Kind in parting,

Friendly in messaging.

We dance our dance

With no one watching.

Sad in doubting,

Upset in feeling.

We dance our dance

With masks of glass.

Glass uncertainty,

Glass unreadable.

We dance our dance

With no outcome feasible.

Wonder of shattering,

Fear in answering.

We dance our dance

And want to stop.

Dancers one,

Masks one.

I dance our dance

Afraid of truth.

I wear a mask,

You do not.

I dance our dance

For I cannot stop.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Do you ever find yourself being good friends with someone, but still hiding what feels like big parts of your personality from them? You want to show them these parts of yourself, but you're scared of how they'll react to those parts of you? The guilt that makes you want to show them, and the fear that keeps you from it?
