When Joy is Unknown

When Joy is Unknown

By: M A R I A

Wishing the sun would rise to pierce my endless night,

It's been too long since blue claimed my heart.

Aching, trembling at the memory of someone,

Praying it beats again—before it tears apart.

Cold winds cut deep, and tears flood like a river.

Joy, a distant echo, pain the reigning king.

In the eyes of a worn-out soul, sorrow lingers,

Laughter now foreign, truth hides beneath a sting.

Unbearably bearable when despair overwhelms,

Shards of glass embed themselves within my chest.

A fraying rope, it cradles a soul’s heavy fate—

Will it snap, when the weight of the world lays to rest?
