Still I Stand

Daniel Ryan Cotler

You may tear at my soul with your lies,

Twist my truth with venomous hands.

You may bury me beneath your gaze,

But still, like dawn, I stand.

Does my resilience upset you?

Does it stir something deep and raw?

Because I rise from the ashes you left,

Unafraid of what I saw.

You spread your poison, crafted your tale,

Turned friends into foes.

False charges, whispered rumors,

But the truth within me grows.

You stole my home, my peace, my ground,

Left me out in the cold.

Recording me in secret,

Believing I'd never be bold.

You whispered in ears of those I held close,

Made me a villain in their eyes.

But even with friends turned to strangers,

I rise above your lies.

Does it break you that I won’t crumble,

That I refuse to fold?

You can take my past, my property,

But you'll never own my soul.

And yes, you think I’ve forgotten,

The rape that stole my breath,

But I’ve risen from that silence,

From the shadow of that death.

You tried to drown my voice,

But I refuse to be dismissed.

Now, my books tell stories of truth,

My words, impossible to twist.

The world has seen my victory,

Despite all you’ve done to me.

You may cast your final blow,

But I’ve broken free.

With every blow you tried to break,

I learned to run, to fly.

Because the heart you tried to shatter

Now beats beneath the sky.

So cast your final blow,

Spread your last deceitful brand

For truth, for love, for justice

Still, I stand.

The smear campaigns, the whispered lies,

Will never silence my demand

For truth, for healing, for justice

Still, I stand.

For my books, my words, my life’s success,

Will outlast every attack.

And while you tried to take it all

I’ll always take it back.

So here I rise, here I stand,

Despite all that you’ve planned.

For truth, for love, for my life reclaimed

Still, I stand.
