Rain – (The Cancer Ballads III)

Daniel McDonagh

2 weeks of heart-breaking pain,

a fortnight of days and nights

absorbed in rain. Mother nature,

you should hide with shame.

This is summer, a Glasgow

summer with an introduction

to the acceptance of mother’s cancer

that cannot be watered down,

no matter how much the rain

turns a smile on a face to a weary frown.

And, you tell yourself

that she can fight and out punch

this fucking disease but her

weakness rips into your hopes with

worrisome fears, and the rain,

it floods your heart.
